Future Tenses: Will and Going To

English has several ways to express the future. The most common are will and going to.

Will + base verb

Use will for: spontaneous decisions (I’ll help you), promises (I will call you), predictions (It will rain tomorrow), offers (I’ll open the door).

Be going to + base verb

Use going to for: plans and intentions (I am going to study medicine), predictions based on evidence (Look at the clouds! It is going to rain).

Structure

Will: subject + will + base verb. Negative: will not (won’t). Question: Will + subject + verb?
Going to: subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb. Negative: am/is/are + not + going to.

Exercises

Exercise 1: Complete with will or going to. (1) I think it ____ (rain) soon. (2) She ____ (study) law next year. (3) Wait! I ____ (open) the door for you.

Exercise 2: Make sentences. (1) They / travel / to London / next summer. (2) He / probably / pass / the exam.
