Making Polite Requests: Can, Could, Will, Would

In English, we use different modal verbs to make requests. The choice depends on the level of formality and politeness required in the situation.

1. Informal Requests

• Can you…? “Can you help me with this?”
• Will you…? “Will you pass me the salt?”

2. Polite Requests

• Could you…? “Could you please open the window?”
• Would you…? “Would you mind closing the door?”

3. Formal Requests

• Would you be so kind as to…? Very formal.
• I was wondering if you could… Polite and indirect.
• Do you think you could…? Polite and tentative.

4. Responding to Requests

Positive: Sure! / Of course! / Certainly! / No problem! / I’d be happy to!

Negative: I’m sorry but… / I’m afraid I can’t… / Unfortunately, I can’t… / I’d like to but…

Exercises

1. Make a polite request: “I want you to carry my bag.” (Use “Could”)
2. Respond positively to: “Could you help me with homework?”
3. Make the request more polite: “Open the door.”
4. Correct the mistake: “Could you to help me?”
5. Write a dialogue with 3 different requests.
