Making Polite Requests: Can, Could, Will, Would
In English, we use different modal verbs to make requests. The choice depends on the level of formality and politeness required in the situation.
1. Informal Requests
- Can you…? “Can you help me with this?”
- Will you…? “Will you pass me the salt?”
2. Polite Requests
- Could you…? “Could you please open the window?”
- Would you…? “Would you mind closing the door?”
3. Formal Requests
- Would you be so kind as to…? Very formal.
- I was wondering if you could… Polite and indirect.
- Do you think you could…? Polite and tentative.
4. Responding to Requests
Positive: Sure! / Of course! / Certainly! / No problem! / I’d be happy to!
Negative: I’m sorry but… / I’m afraid I can’t… / Unfortunately, I can’t… / I’d like to but…
Exercises
- Make a polite request: “I want you to carry my bag.” (Use “Could”)
- Respond positively to: “Could you help me with homework?”
- Make the request more polite: “Open the door.”
- Correct the mistake: “Could you to help me?”
- Write a dialogue with 3 different requests.
