Phrasal Verbs: Separable and Inseparable

Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb + preposition/adverb that create a new meaning. They are very common in English and can be separable or inseparable.

1. Separable Phrasal Verbs

The object can go between the verb and the particle or after the particle. Example: Turn off the light / Turn the light off. If the object is a pronoun, it MUST go between: Turn it off. (NOT: Turn off it)

2. Inseparable Phrasal Verbs

The object MUST come after the particle. Example: Look after the children (NOT: Look the children after). Common examples: look for, wait for, get along with, run into, care for.

3. Common Phrasal Verbs List

• Bring up: raise a child / mention a topic. She brought up three children alone.
• Call off: cancel. They called off the meeting.
• Come across: find by chance. I came across an old photo.
• Figure out: understand/solve. I can’t figure out this puzzle.
• Give up: stop trying. Never give up on your dreams.
• Look up to: admire. I look up to my father.
• Put up with: tolerate. I can’t put up with this noise.
• Take after: resemble. She takes after her mother.

Exercises

1. Separate the phrasal verb if possible: “Put on your jacket.”
2. Correct: “I ran my friend into at the mall.”
3. Replace the object with a pronoun: “Turn off the TV.”
4. Complete: “She is very independent. She was ____ (bring up) alone.”
5. Write a short story using 5 different phrasal verbs.
