Transitive and Intransitive Verbs in Arabic
Verbs are classified by whether they require an object to complete their meaning.
Intransitive Verb
Complete without a direct object. Examples: He stood. He sat. He slept. He died. The patient recovered.
Transitive Verb
Requires a direct object. Can take one object: He wrote the lesson. Two objects: He gave the student a book. Three objects: He informed me the news true.
Changing Transitivity
Some intransitive verbs become transitive by adding a hamza or by doubling the middle letter. Example: He went out vs He took out.
Exercises
Classify as transitive or intransitive: 1) He came. 2) He opened the door. 3) He sat. 4) He taught the boy the Quran.
