Asking for and Giving Directions

Knowing how to ask for and give directions is an essential skill in English. This lesson covers key vocabulary and useful phrases.

Asking for directions

Excuse me, how do I get to…? Excuse me, is there a bank near here? Can you tell me the way to…? Where is the nearest hospital? Could you show me on the map?

Giving directions

Go straight ahead. Turn left/right. Take the first/second street on the left/right. It’s on your left/right. It’s opposite the bank. It’s next to the school. It’s between the post office and the library.

Prepositions of place

Next to, opposite, in front of, behind, between, at the corner of, near, far from.

Example conversation

A: Excuse me, how do I get to the train station? B: Go straight ahead, then turn right. It’s on your left, opposite the supermarket.
