Conditional Sentences: Type 0, 1, 2, 3
Conditional sentences express that one action depends on another. They consist of an if-clause (condition) and a main clause (result).
Type 0: General Truth
If + present simple, present simple. “If you heat ice, it melts.”
Type 1: Real/Future Possibility
If + present simple, will + base verb. “If it rains, I will stay home.”
Type 2: Unreal Present/Future
If + past simple, would + base verb. “If I had money, I would travel.”
Type 3: Unreal Past
If + past perfect, would have + past participle. “If I had studied, I would have passed.”
Exercises
- Complete: “If I were you, I _____ (accept) the offer.”
- Transform: “I didn’t study, so I failed.” → Type 3 conditional.
