Linking Words: Addition, Contrast, Cause and Effect
Linking words (also called connectors) are used to connect ideas and make writing coherent.
Addition
- Moreover / Furthermore / In addition: “He is intelligent. Moreover, he is hardworking.”
- Besides / Also: “She speaks Arabic. She also speaks French.”
Contrast
- Although / Even though: “Although it was raining, we went out.”
- Despite / In spite of: “Despite the rain, we went out.”
- However / Nevertheless: “It was raining. However, we went out.”
Cause and Effect
- Because / Since / As: “Because he studied hard, he passed.”
- Therefore / Consequently / As a result: “He studied hard. Therefore, he passed.”
- So / Thus: “He studied hard, so he passed.”
Exercises
- Complete with appropriate linker: “She was tired, _____ she continued working.”
- Rewrite using “although”: “He is rich. He is not happy.”
