Modal Verbs: Can, Could, May, Might, Must, Should

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express ability, permission, obligation, possibility, and advice. They are essential for expressing different nuances in English.

Ability and Permission

• Can: ability (I can swim) and informal permission (Can I go?).
• Could: past ability (I could swim at 5) and polite request (Could you help?).

Possibility and Certainty

• May: formal permission (May I come in?) and possibility (It may rain).
• Might: weaker possibility (It might rain later).
• Must: certainty/strong deduction (He must be at home).

Obligation and Advice

• Must: strong obligation (You must study).
• Should: advice/recommendation (You should see a doctor).
