Introduction
In this lesson, we will study writing informal letters: structure, language and useful expressions, according to the Algerian curriculum for 2nd Year Middle School. Informal letters are personal letters written to friends and family members. Unlike formal letters, they use a friendly and casual tone. Learning to write informal letters is an important skill that helps you communicate personally and express your feelings and experiences in writing. This lesson will guide you through the steps of writing an excellent informal letter.
Main Concepts
Structure of an informal letter: 1) Your address (top right corner), 2) Date (below your address), 3) Salutation/Greeting (Dear…, Hi…, Hello…), 4) Introduction (asking how the person is, explaining why you’re writing), 5) Body paragraphs (the main content of your letter), 6) Conclusion (summing up, mentioning future plans), 7) Closing (Best wishes, Love, Yours, Take care), 8) Your signature. Each part has its own conventions. The language should be friendly and natural, as if you were speaking to the person directly.
Useful expressions for informal letters: Greetings: “Dear Mum and Dad”, “Hi Ahmed”, “Hello my dear friend”, “How are you? I hope you are doing well.” Introduction: “I’m writing to tell you about…”, “It was great to hear from you.”, “Sorry I haven’t written for a while but I’ve been busy.” Body: “Guess what!”, “You’ll never believe what happened!”, “I have some exciting news!” Closing: “I can’t wait to see you.”, “Write back soon!”, “Give my love to the family.”, “Looking forward to hearing from you.” Using these expressions makes your letter sound natural and friendly. Remember to organize your ideas into clear paragraphs and use linking words like “firstly”, “then”, “after that”, “finally” to connect your ideas.
Examples and Practice
Example: Write a letter to your cousin telling him/her about your summer holiday. Use the structure above and include at least three activities you did. Check your letter for correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. Make sure you have used an appropriate greeting and closing. Practice writing letters on different topics: inviting a friend to your birthday party, thanking a relative for a gift, describing your new school to a friend who moved away. Writing letters is a valuable skill that you will use throughout your life.
