Inversions: Advanced Sentence Structures
Inversion is when we change the normal word order of a sentence, typically placing the verb before the subject. This adds emphasis and formality. Common in BAC reading texts and useful for advanced writing.
What is Inversion?
Normal word order: Subject + Verb. Inversion: Verb/Auxiliary + Subject. Inversion usually occurs after certain negative or restrictive adverbs and adverbial phrases.
Inversion with Negative Adverbs:
When negative adverbs are placed at the beginning of a sentence, we invert the subject and auxiliary verb.
“Never have I seen such beauty.” / “Rarely does he arrive on time.” / “Seldom do we witness such events.” / “Hardly had we left when it started raining.” / “No sooner had she arrived than she called me.” / “Not only did he pass, but he got the highest mark.”
Without inversion: “I have never seen such beauty.”
Inversion with ‘Only’:
“Only after the exam did he realise his mistake.” / “Only when I apologised did she forgive me.” / “Only by working hard can you succeed.” / “Only then did they understand the problem.”
Inversion with ‘So’ and ‘Such’:
“So beautiful was the sunset that we stopped to admire it.” / “Such was his anger that he could not speak.” / “Such were the conditions that no one could work.”
Inversion with Conditional ‘If’:
Formal conditionals can use inversion instead of ‘if’:
“Had I known (if I had known), I would have helped.” / “Were she here (if she were here), she would agree.” / “Should you need assistance (if you should need), please call.”
BAC Exercise:
Rewrite using inversion: 1. I have never seen such a beautiful place. 2. He not only speaks English but also French. 3. If I had known, I would have come earlier.
