Writing an Email: Formal and Informal
Email writing is a common task in the BAC exam. Knowing the difference between formal and informal emails is essential for success.
Formal Email:
Structure:
- Subject line: clear and concise. Ex: “Application for Scholarship Program”
- Salutation: Dear Sir/Madam, / Dear Mr. Smith,
- Introduction: state the purpose. Ex: “I am writing to apply for…”
- Body: develop your points formally.
- Conclusion: express hope for response. Ex: “I look forward to hearing from you.”
- Closing: Yours faithfully, / Yours sincerely, / Best regards,
Formal language features: No contractions, precise vocabulary, polite structures. Ex: “I would be grateful if you could…” instead of “Please…”
Informal Email:
Structure:
- Subject: casual. Ex: “Catch up!”
- Salutation: Hi/Hello + first name,
- Introduction: friendly opening. Ex: “How are you? Hope you’re doing well.”
- Body: chatty and relaxed.
- Conclusion: Ex: “Can’t wait to see you!”
- Closing: Love, / Best, / See you soon,
