Phrasal Verbs: Common Phrasal Verbs with UP, DOWN, OUT, OFF
Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb and a preposition/adverb that create a new meaning. They are essential for the BAC exam and everyday English.
Phrasal verbs with UP:
- Give up: stop trying. Ex: “Never give up on your dreams.”
- Pick up: collect/lift. Ex: “Please pick up your books.”
- Turn up: increase volume/arrive. Ex: “He turned up late.”
- Make up: invent/reconcile. Ex: “She made up a story.”
- Look up: search for information. Ex: “Look up the word in a dictionary.”
Phrasal verbs with DOWN:
- Break down: stop functioning. Ex: “My car broke down.”
- Calm down: relax. Ex: “Calm down, everything will be fine.”
- Let down: disappoint. Ex: “Don’t let me down.”
- Write down: note. Ex: “Write down the important points.”
Phrasal verbs with OUT:
- Find out: discover. Ex: “I found out the truth.”
- Carry out: perform/execute. Ex: “The experiment was carried out.”
- Figure out: understand/solve. Ex: “I can’t figure out this problem.”
- Point out: indicate. Ex: “He pointed out the mistake.”
Phrasal verbs with OFF:
- Put off: postpone. Ex: “Don’t put off your homework.”
- Turn off: stop (device). Ex: “Turn off the lights.”
- Call off: cancel. Ex: “The meeting was called off.”
BAC Example 2022:
“The government has carried out several projects to improve the education system.” – “Carried out” means implemented/performed.
