Modal Verbs: Can, Could, May, Might, Must, Should
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express necessity, possibility, permission, or ability. They are frequently tested in BAC exams.
Can / Could:
- Ability: “I can speak English.” / “I could swim when I was five.”
- Permission: “Can I go out?” / “Could I use your phone?” (polite)
- Possibility: “It can be cold in winter.” / “It could rain tomorrow.”
May / Might:
- Permission (formal): “May I come in?”
- Possibility: “It may rain.” / “It might rain.” (less certain)
Must:
- Obligation: “You must wear a seatbelt.”
- Necessity: “I must finish this work.”
- Deduction: “He must be at home. The lights are on.”
Should:
- Advice/Recommendation: “You should see a doctor.”
- Expectation: “The train should arrive soon.”
Negative forms:
- Can’t = inability/prohibition: “You can’t smoke here.”
- Mustn’t = prohibition: “You mustn’t cheat on exams.”
- Don’t have to = lack of necessity: “You don’t have to come early.”
BAC Example 2022:
“Students must respect the exam regulations. They can use only authorized materials.” – Must (obligation), Can (permission).
BAC Example 2023:
“The government should invest more in renewable energy sources to protect the environment.” – Should (recommendation).
