Passive Voice: Formation and Uses

The passive voice is used when the focus is on the action or the receiver, not the doer.

Formation:

Subject + be (conjugated) + past participle + (by agent).

Across Tenses:

Present simple: is/are + pp. “It is done.”

Past simple: was/were + pp. “It was done.”

Present perfect: has/have been + pp. “It has been done.”

Future: will be + pp. “It will be done.”

Modal: must be + pp. “It must be done.”

When to use:

• Agent unknown: “My car was stolen.”
• Agent obvious: “He was arrested.”
• Action more important: “The vaccine was developed.”

2. Someone has stolen my wallet. → My wallet has been stolen.
