Tag Questions

A tag question is a short question added at the end of a statement. It is used to check information or ask for agreement.

Rules for forming tag questions

• If the statement is positive, the tag is negative: You are a student, aren’t you?
• If the statement is negative, the tag is positive: You aren’t tired, are you?
• Use the same auxiliary verb in the tag: He can swim, can’t he? She has finished, hasn’t she?
• If there is no auxiliary, use do/does/did: You like pizza, don’t you? He went home, didn’t he?

Special cases

• I am… → aren’t I? I am right, aren’t I?
• Let’s… → shall we? Let’s go, shall we?
• Imperatives → will you? Open the door, will you?

Intonation

Rising intonation = asking for confirmation (real question). Falling intonation = asking for agreement.
