Past Perfect Tense
The Past Perfect tense is used to show that one action happened before another action in the past. It is formed with had + past participle.
Formation
- Affirmative: Subject + had + past participle. Example: I had finished my homework before dinner.
- Negative: Subject + had + not + past participle. Example: She had not (hadn’t) eaten before leaving.
- Interrogative: Had + subject + past participle? Example: Had they arrived before you?
Uses
- To show an action completed before another past action: When we arrived, the film had already started.
- To show the cause of a past state: She was tired because she had worked all day.
Time expressions
Already, just, never, before, after, by the time, when.
Exercises
- Complete: When we got to the station, the train ___ (leave).
- Make sentences using the Past Perfect: before I arrived / they / finish dinner
- Correct the mistakes: I had saw that film before.
