Simple Past – Regular Verbs

The Simple Past is used to talk about completed actions in the past. For regular verbs, we add -ed to the base form of the verb.

Spelling Rules:

• Most verbs: add -ed (work – worked)
• Verbs ending in -e: add -d (like – liked)
• Consonant + y: y becomes ied (study – studied)
• One-syllable CVC: double last letter (stop – stopped)

Pronunciation of -ed:

• /t/ after unvoiced sounds: worked
• /d/ after voiced sounds: played
• /id/ after -t or -d: wanted
