Simple Past – Regular Verbs
The Simple Past is used to talk about completed actions in the past. For regular verbs, we add -ed to the base form of the verb.
Formation:
Affirmative: Subject + verb-ed + complement
Negative: Subject + did not (didnt) + base verb + complement
Interrogative: Did + subject + base verb + complement?
Spelling Rules:
- Most verbs: add -ed (work – worked)
- Verbs ending in -e: add -d (like – liked)
- Consonant + y: y becomes ied (study – studied)
- One-syllable CVC: double last letter (stop – stopped)
Pronunciation of -ed:
