Past Simple vs Past Continuous — الفرق بين الماضي البسيط والماضي المستمر

Lesson Objectives:

• Understand the formation and use of Past Simple
• Understand the formation and use of Past Continuous
• Know the difference between the two tenses
• Use them correctly together in sentences

1. Past Simple (الماضي البسيط):

الاستخدام: يُستخدم للتعبير عن فعل حدث وانتهى في الماضي.

التكوين:

• الفعل المنتظم: Verb + ed (played, watched, studied)
• الفعل الشاذ: التصريف الثاني للفعل (went, ate, wrote)
• النفي: Subject + did not + base verb (I did not go)
• السؤال: Did + Subject + base verb? (Did you see him?)

أمثلة:

• I visited my grandmother yesterday.
• She wrote a letter last night.
• They did not play football.

2. Past Continuous (الماضي المستمر):

الاستخدام: يُستخدم للتعبير عن فعل كان مستمراً في الماضي.

التكوين: Subject + was/were + Verb-ing

• I/He/She/It was playing
• We/You/They were playing
• النفي: was/were + not (wasn't/weren't)

أمثلة:

• I was reading a book at 8 PM yesterday.
• They were playing football when it started to rain.

3. الفرق بين Past Simple و Past Continuous:

Past Simple: فعل قصير ومنتهٍ في وقت محدد — I ate breakfast at 7.

Past Continuous: فعل طويل ومستمر — I was eating breakfast at 7.

4. الاستخدام معاً:

غالباً ما يستخدم Past Continuous (فعل طويل) مع Past Simple (فعل قصير يقاطعه):

• While I was watching TV, the phone rang.
• She was walking home when she met her friend.
• They were studying when the lights went out.

5. Exercises:

Exercise 1: Put the verbs in the correct tense.

a) I (watch) was watching TV when she (arrive) arrived.

b) They (play) were playing football yesterday at 5 PM.

c) She (not/go) did not go to school last Monday.

Exercise 2: Correct the mistakes.

a) I was go to the cinema yesterday. → I went to the cinema yesterday.

b) While he studied, his friend called. → While he was studying, his friend called.

c) They were play football at 3 PM. → They were playing football at 3 PM.
