1. What is the Second Conditional? / ما هو الشرط الثاني?

The second conditional is used to talk about unreal or imaginary situations in the present or future – things that are unlikely or impossible.

Structure:

If clause (condition)	Main clause (result)
If + Past Simple	Would / Could / Might + base verb
If I had a million dollars,	I would travel around the world.
If she studied harder,	she could pass the exam easily.
If it didn’t rain,	we might go to the beach.

2. Examples / أمثلة

• If I were you, I would study more. (present unreal advice)
• If we had wings, we could fly. (impossible situation)
• If he lived near the sea, he would swim every day. (imaginary situation)
• If I knew the answer, I would tell you. (unreal present)

Note: In the second conditional, we use “were” for all subjects (I, he, she, it): If I were (not “was”) is the correct formal form.

3. Difference between First and Second Conditional / الفرق بين الشرط الأول والثاني

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences using the second conditional:

Summary / خلاصة

The second conditional describes imaginary or unreal situations. Use If + Past Simple + Would/Could/Might + base verb. Remember: “If I were” is the correct form for all subjects!
