The Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous are two tenses that connect the past with the present. This lesson explains their forms, uses, and differences.
Present Perfect Simple
Form: have/has + past participle.
Uses: (1) Experience: “I have visited Paris.” (2) Result: “She has finished her homework.” (3) With ‘for’ and ‘since’: “I have lived here for 5 years.” (4) News: “The president has resigned.”
Present Perfect Continuous
Form: have/has + been + verb-ing.
Uses: (1) Action that started in the past and continues: “I have been studying for 3 hours.” (2) Action that has recently stopped with visible results: “You look tired. Have you been working?” (3) Emphasis on duration: “She has been waiting since 2 o’clock.”
Key Differences
- Present Perfect: focuses on the result/completion. “I have read the book.” (finished).
- Present Perfect Continuous: focuses on the action/process. “I have been reading the book.” (still reading).
- With numbers/quantities: use Present Perfect. “I have written 3 emails.”
- With duration/ongoing: use Continuous. “I have been writing emails all day.”
Time Expressions
- For: duration. “for 2 hours.”
- Since: starting point. “since Monday.”
- Already / Yet / Just: with Present Perfect. “I have already finished.”
- Lately / Recently: with both. “I have been feeling tired lately.”
- How long: questions about duration. “How long have you been studying?”
