Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express ability, permission, obligation, possibility, advice, and more. They are essential for communication in English. This lesson covers the main modal verbs and their uses.

What are Modal Verbs?

Modal verbs are special verbs that modify the meaning of the main verb. They do not change form (no -s in third person) and are followed by the base form of the verb. Main modals: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would.

Can and Could

Can: ability in the present. “I can swim.” Permission: “Can I go out?” Possibility: “It can rain today.”
Could: ability in the past. “I could run fast when I was young.” Polite request: “Could you help me?” Possibility: “It could be true.”

May and Might

May: formal permission. “May I come in?” Possibility: “It may rain tomorrow.”
Might: less certain possibility. “I might visit you next week.” (less sure than “may”)

Must and Have to

Must: strong obligation (personal feeling). “I must study for the exam.” Prohibition: “You must not smoke here.”
Have to: external obligation. “I have to wear a uniform at school.”

Should and Ought to

Should: advice or recommendation. “You should see a doctor.” “You shouldn’t eat too much sugar.” Ought to: similar to should but less common. “You ought to apologize.”

Would

Would: polite requests. “Would you like some tea?” Conditional: “I would go if I had time.” Habit in past: “I would often play football.”

Exercises

Complete with the correct modal: “You _____ (should/must/can) brush your teeth before bed.”
What’s the difference between: “I can swim” and “I could swim”?
Write sentences using: can, must, should, may, would.
