“There is” and “there are” are used to say that something exists or is present. Prepositions of place describe where things are located.

1- There is / There are

• There is + singular noun: There is a book on the table. There is a school near my house.
• There are + plural noun: There are many students in the class. There are two windows in the room.
• Negative: There is not (isn’t) / There are not (aren’t). There isn’t a supermarket here. There aren’t any chairs.
• Question: Is there…? / Are there…? Is there a hospital nearby? Are there any restaurants?

2- Prepositions of Place

• In: inside something. The pen is in the pencil case. She lives in Algiers.
• On: on the surface of something. The book is on the desk. The cat is on the roof.
• At: a specific point or location. I am at school. She is at the bus stop.
• Under: below something. The cat is under the table.
• Next to / Beside: very close, on one side. My house is next to the mosque.
• Behind / In front of: at the back / at the front. The garden is behind the house. The car is in front of the door.
• Between: in the middle of two things. The school is between the hospital and the library.
• Near: close to. The supermarket is near my house.

Examples

• There is a beautiful garden behind my house.
• There are three bedrooms in my house.
• My school is between the pharmacy and the bank.
• The book is on the shelf.
