Question tags are short questions at the end of a sentence. They are used to confirm information or ask for agreement. The auxiliary verb in the tag depends on the main sentence.
Formation Rules
- If the sentence is positive, the tag is negative: You are a student, aren’t you?
- If the sentence is negative, the tag is positive: You aren’t tired, are you?
Examples with Different Tenses
- Present Simple (be): She is nice, isn’t she? They are here, aren’t they? He isn’t late, is he?
- Present Simple (other verbs): You like coffee, don’t you? He plays football, doesn’t he? They don’t know, do they?
- Past Simple (be): You were at home, weren’t you? She wasn’t there, was she?
- Past Simple (other verbs): They arrived early, didn’t they? He didn’t call, did he?
- Present Perfect: She has finished, hasn’t she? They haven’t come, have they?
- Modal verbs: He can swim, can’t he? You should study, shouldn’t you?
Special Cases
- I am: I am right, aren’t I? (not amn’t I)
- Let’s: Let’s go, shall we?
- Imperatives: Open the door, will you? Don’t be late, will you?
- Nothing/Everything: Nothing is perfect, is it? Everything is fine, isn’t it?
- Nobody/Everybody: Nobody came, did they? Everybody is happy, aren’t they?
Intonation
- Falling intonation: asking for agreement (I confirm).
- Rising intonation: asking for information (I doubt).
Exercises
- Add question tags: You are Algerian, ___? He doesn’t like tea, ___?
- Correct: She is coming, isn’t she? / She is coming, doesn’t she?
- Complete: Let’s go to the cinema, ___? I am late, ___?
