A narrative paragraph tells a story or describes an event. It has a clear structure with a beginning, middle, and end.
Structure of a Narrative Paragraph
- Topic sentence: Introduces the event or story. Ex: “Last summer, I had an unforgettable experience.”
- Supporting sentences: Describe what happened in chronological order. Use time words: first, then, next, after that, finally. Ex: “First, we arrived at the beach. Then, we set up our tent. After that, we went swimming.”
- Concluding sentence: Ends the story or gives a final thought. Ex: “It was the best day of my summer vacation.”
Key Vocabulary for Narrative Writing
- Time expressions: first, then, next, after that, later, finally, eventually, in the end, suddenly, immediately, when, while, as soon as.
- Action verbs: went, arrived, started, finished, decided, continued, stopped, noticed, realized, exclaimed.
- Descriptive adjectives: amazing, exciting, wonderful, terrible, beautiful, fascinating, unforgettable.
- Feelings and emotions: happy, excited, scared, nervous, surprised, relieved, proud, disappointed.
Sample Narrative Paragraph
“Last Friday, I went on a school trip to the museum. First, we arrived at 9 am and met our guide. Then, we visited the ancient history section where I saw mummies for the first time. I was amazed! After that, we had lunch in the museum garden. Finally, we watched a documentary about dinosaurs. It was an educational and enjoyable trip.”
Tips for Good Narrative Writing
- Use past tenses (Past Simple, Past Continuous).
- Add details to make the story interesting.
- Use time words to show the sequence of events.
- Include feelings and reactions.
- Keep it focused on one main event.
