Simple Past Tense
The Simple Past Tense is used to describe completed actions in the past. It is one of the most frequently used tenses in English narrative.
1. Formation
Regular verbs: Subject + verb-ed. Example: I played, she watched.
Negative: Subject + did not (didn’t) + base verb. Example: He didn’t go.
Questions: Did + subject + base verb? Example: Did you see them?
2. Spelling Rules for -ed
Most verbs: add -ed (play→played, walk→walked). Verbs ending in -e: add -d (like→liked, dance→danced). Verbs ending in consonant + y: change y to i + ed (study→studied, try→tried). Verbs ending in vowel + y: add -ed (play→played, enjoy→enjoyed). Verbs ending in CVC: double final consonant + ed (stop→stopped, plan→planned).
3. Irregular Verbs
Many common verbs are irregular: go→went, eat→ate, see→saw, buy→bought, take→took, make→made, write→wrote, read→read (pronounced “red”), speak→spoke, swim→swam. These must be memorized as they don’t follow the -ed pattern.
