Quantifiers in English

Quantifiers are words that indicate quantity. They are used before nouns to express how much or how many.

Quantifiers with Countable Nouns

• many: ‘How many books do you have?’
• a few: ‘I have a few friends.’
• few: ‘Few people came to the party.’ (not many)
• several: ‘I have several ideas.’
• a number of: ‘A number of students were absent.’

Quantifiers with Uncountable Nouns

• much: ‘How much water do you drink?’
• a little: ‘I have a little money.’
• little: ‘Little time remains.’ (not much)
• a great deal of: ‘A great deal of effort.’

Quantifiers with Both

• some: ‘I have some books / some water.’
• any: ‘Do you have any questions / any news?’
• no: ‘There are no students / no water.’
• a lot of / lots of: ‘A lot of people / a lot of time.’

Exercise

Fill in: 1. How (much/many) sugar do you need? 2. I have (a few/a little) good friends. 3. There isn’t (some/any) milk. 4. She has (much/a lot of) money.
