Writing a Persuasive Essay

A persuasive essay aims to convince the reader to agree with your opinion.

Structure

1. Introduction: Hook + background + thesis statement (your opinion).
2. Body paragraph 1: First argument + examples.
3. Body paragraph 2: Second argument + examples.
4. Counter-argument: Address the opposing view and refute it.
5. Conclusion: Restate thesis + call to action.

Useful phrases

• Introduction: “In my opinion…” / “I believe that…” / “There is no doubt that…”
• Arguments: “First of all…” / “Furthermore…” / “Another reason is…”
• Counter-argument: “Some people argue that…” / “However, I disagree because…”
• Conclusion: “In conclusion…” / “To sum up…” / “Therefore, I strongly believe…”

Example

Thesis: Students should wear school uniforms.

Argument 1: Uniforms create equality and reduce bullying.

Argument 2: They save time and money for families.

Counter: Some say uniforms limit expression, but students can express themselves through accessories.

Conclusion: Uniforms are beneficial for everyone.

Exercise

Write a persuasive essay (12-15 lines) on: “Should homework be banned?”
