English — Present Continuous (المضارع المستمر)

Learning Objectives (أهداف التعلم)

  • To understand when we use the present continuous tense.
  • To form positive sentences with am/is/are + verb-ing.
  • To make questions and negative sentences.

Lesson (الدرس)

The present continuous tense (المضارع المستمر) is used to talk about actions that are happening NOW, at this moment.

Form (الصيغة)

Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing Example
I am eating I am eating lunch now.
He / She / It is playing She is playing in the garden.
You / We / They are studying We are studying English.

Negative (النفي)

Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing
I am not sleeping
He / She / It is not (isn’t) working
You / We / They are not (aren’t) coming

Questions (الأسئلة)

Am/Is/Are + Subject + verb-ing Example
Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming?
Is he/she/it running? Is he running fast?
Are you/we/they listening? Are you listening to me?

Examples (أمثلة)

  • Look! The cat is sleeping on the sofa. (انظر! القطة نائمة على الأريكة)
  • Listen! The teacher is talking. (استمع! المعلم يتحدث)
  • I am writing a letter now. (أنا أكتب رسالة الآن)
  • They are playing football in the park. (هم يلعبون كرة القدم في الحديقة)
  • She is not reading; she is watching TV. (هي لا تقرأ، إنها تشاهد التلفاز)

  1. Complete: The boys ______ (play) in the yard.
  2. Complete: She ______ (not/sleep); she ______ (study).

  4. Correct the mistake: “He are eating dinner.” → ______
  5. Write 3 sentences about what is happening right now in your classroom.

Look around your house right now. Write 5 sentences about what each family member is doing. Example: “My mother is cooking in the kitchen. My brother is doing his homework.”
