English — Prepositions of Time (حروف الجر الزمنية)

Lesson (الدرس)

Prepositions of time tell us WHEN something happens. The three main prepositions are: at, in, and on.

AT – مع الوقت المحدد

Use Example Arabic
Clock times at 8 o’clock, at half past two الساعة الثامنة
Meal times at breakfast, at lunchtime وقت الفطور
Parts of day at night, at midnight في الليل
Special times at the weekend, at the moment في نهاية الأسبوع

ON – مع أيام وتواريخ

Use Example Arabic
Days on Sunday, on Monday يوم الأحد
Dates on 1st January, on 25th June في 1 جانفي
Special days on my birthday, on holiday في عيد ميلادي

IN – مع شهور، سنوات، فصول

Use Example Arabic
Months in January, in March في جانفي
Years in 2025, in 1990 في سنة 2025
Seasons in summer, in winter في الصيف
Parts of day in the morning, in the afternoon في الصباح

Write a short diary entry for today. Use at least 2 prepositions of time (at, in, on) in your sentences. Example: “I woke up at 7:00. I went to school on Sunday morning. In the afternoon, I played football.”

Summary (ملخص)

  • AT = specific times: at 3 o’clock, at night, at lunchtime.
  • ON = days and dates: on Monday, on 1st January.
  • IN = months, years, seasons, longer periods: in June, in 2026, in winter.
  • Exception: “in the morning/afternoon/evening” but “at night”.
  • No preposition before “today”, “yesterday”, “tomorrow”, “next week”, “last month”.
