In English, we use different verbs with different sports. We use ‘play’ for team sports and ball games: play football, play basketball, play tennis, play volleyball. We use ‘go’ for activities ending in -ing: go swimming, go running, go cycling, go skiing. We use ‘do’ for individual sports and martial arts: do judo, do karate, do gymnastics, do yoga.

\\n

To express how often you do a sport, use adverbs of frequency: always (100%), usually (80%), often (60%), sometimes (40%), rarely (10%), never (0%). For example: ‘I always play football on Fridays.’ ‘I sometimes go swimming in the summer.’ ‘I never do karate.’

\\n

To express preferences, say: ‘I like playing basketball.’ ‘I love going cycling.’ ‘I prefer swimming to running.’ ‘I am interested in football.’ ‘My favourite sport is tennis.’ ‘I am a fan of Manchester United.’

\\n

To invite someone to do a sport, use: ‘Would you like to play tennis with me?’ ‘How about going swimming this weekend?’ ‘Let’s play football after school!’ ‘Do you want to join the basketball team?’

\\n

Here are some health benefits of sports: they keep your body fit, strengthen your heart and muscles, help you make new friends, teach you teamwork and discipline, reduce stress and improve your mood.
