Talking about hobbies and interests is a great way to get to know people in English. In this lesson, you will learn the names of common hobbies and how to ask and answer questions about what you like to do in your free time.

A hobby is an activity that you enjoy doing in your free time. There are many types of hobbies: creative hobbies (drawing, painting, writing), active hobbies (sports, dancing, cycling), relaxing hobbies (reading, listening to music, watching films), and social hobbies (playing with friends, board games, cooking).

\\n

To talk about your hobbies in English, use the verbs ‘like’, ‘love’, ‘enjoy’, ‘don’t like’, or ‘hate’ followed by the verb with -ing. For example: ‘I like reading books.’ ‘I love playing football.’ ‘I don’t like cooking.’

To ask someone about their hobbies, say: ‘What do you like to do in your free time?’ or ‘Do you like playing tennis?’ The answer can be: ‘Yes, I do.’ or ‘No, I don’t.’

You can also use ‘I am good at’ or ‘I am interested in’ to talk about your abilities and interests. For example: ‘I am good at painting.’ ‘I am interested in photography.’

Here are some common hobbies: reading books, watching TV, playing football, swimming, cycling, drawing, painting, singing, dancing, playing the guitar, collecting stamps, playing video games, gardening, cooking, photography.

Example 1: Talking about hobbies

A: What do you like to do in your free time?\\nB: I love reading books and listening to music. What about you?\\nA: I enjoy playing football with my friends. I also like swimming in summer.

Example 2: Expressing likes and dislikes

I like drawing, but I don’t like painting. My sister loves dancing, and she is very good at it. My brother hates getting up early, but he enjoys playing the guitar in the evening.
