🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish between countable and uncountable nouns
  • Use quantifiers correctly in context
  • Apply quantifiers in bac exam-style exercises

📖 Introduction

Quantifiers are words that indicate the quantity or amount of something. Choosing the right quantifier depends on whether the noun is countable or uncountable, and on the meaning you want to express (positive, negative, question).

📖 Main Quantifiers

Quantifier Countable Uncountable Meaning
Many A large number (used in Q & N)
Much A large amount (used in Q & N)
Some An unspecified quantity (positive)
Any Used in Q & N, or “no matter which”
No Not any / zero
A few / Few Small number (few = not enough)
A little / Little Small amount (little = not enough)
A lot of / Lots of A large quantity (positive)

⚡ Rules and Examples

🔹 Many vs Much

Use many with countable nouns (many books, many students).

Use much with uncountable nouns (much water, much time).

Both are common in questions and negatives: “How many?”, “How much?”, “Not many”, “Not much”.

🔹 Some vs Any

Some: Used in positive sentences and offers/requests. “I have some friends. Would you like some coffee?”

Any: Used in negatives and questions. “I don’t have any money. Do you have any questions?”

🔹 A few vs Few / A little vs Little

A few = a small but sufficient number (I have a few friends = I have enough friends).

Few = an insufficient number (Few people came = not many came, fewer than expected).

A little = a small but sufficient amount (Add a little sugar).

Little = an insufficient amount (There is little hope = almost no hope).
