The First Conditional
The first conditional is used to talk about possible situations in the future and their likely results.
Formation
If + present simple, will + base verb
- If it rains, I will take an umbrella.
- If you study, you will pass the exam.
Uses
- Possible future situations: If I have time, I will visit you.
- Promises: If you help me, I will help you.
- Warnings: If you run, you will fall.
Note
We can also use unless (if not): Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus.
The order can change: “I will go if you come” = “If you come, I will go”.
We can use modal verbs instead of will: If you feel sick, you should see a doctor.
Exercises
- Complete: If it ____ (be) sunny, we ____ (go) to the beach. If you ____ (not study), you ____ (not pass).
