Subject-Verb Agreement

Basic Rule

• “The cat sleeps.” (singular)
• “The cats sleep.” (plural)

Special Cases

• Each/Every + singular: “Every student is present.”
• Either/Neither: “Neither knows.”
• And → plural: “Ali and Ahmed play.”
• Or/nor → nearest: “Either Ali or his friends are coming.”
• Collective nouns: “The team is winning.”

Exercise

Choose: 1. The news (is/are) interesting. 2. Mathematics (is/are) my favourite.
