Gerunds and Infinitives: Verb Patterns
Some verbs are followed by gerunds (verb-ing), others by infinitives (to + verb), and some by both with a change in meaning.
Verbs + Gerund (enjoy, finish, avoid, suggest, keep, mind, practice)
I enjoy reading. She avoids eating junk food.
Verbs + Infinitive (want, need, hope, plan, decide, promise, expect)
I want to travel. They hope to win.
Verbs + Both (like, start, begin, hate, love)
I like swimming / I like to swim. (similar meaning)
Verbs where meaning changes (remember, forget, stop, try)
I remembered to lock the door. (I didn t forget)
I remember locking the door. (I recall doing it)
