There Is / There Are: Affirmative, Negative, Questions

1. Usage

We use there is (singular) and there are (plural) to say that something exists or doesn’t exist.

2. Affirmative

There is + singular noun: There is a book on the table.
There are + plural noun: There are two cats in the garden.

3. Negative

There isn’t (is not) + singular: There isn’t any milk in the fridge.
There aren’t (are not) + plural: There aren’t any students in the classroom.

4. Questions

Is there + singular? Is there a bank near here? Yes, there is / No, there isn’t.
Are there + plural? Are there any shops? Yes, there are / No, there aren’t.

5. Exercises

Exercise 1: Complete: There _____ (is/are) a pen on the desk. There _____ (is/are) three chairs. There _____ (isn’t/aren’t) any milk.

Exercise 2: Describe your classroom using there is/are (5 sentences).
