Present Simple vs Present Continuous

Understanding the difference between Present Simple and Present Continuous is essential for speaking English correctly.

1. Present Simple

Form: Subject + base verb (+ s/es for he/she/it)

Uses: Habits (I wake up at 7 am), Facts (Water boils at 100°C), Permanent situations (She works in Algiers).

Signal words: always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day, once a week.

2. Present Continuous

Form: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

Uses: Actions happening now (I am reading), Temporary situations (She is staying with her aunt), Future arrangements (We are meeting tomorrow).

Signal words: now, right now, at the moment, today, look!, listen!

3. Stative verbs

Some verbs describe states and are not used in continuous: know, believe, like, love, hate, want, need, prefer, understand, belong.
