The Present Perfect vs Past Simple
The Present Perfect and Past Simple are two tenses that often confuse learners. Understanding the difference is crucial for accurate communication in English.
1. Present Perfect
Form: Subject + have/has + past participle
Uses:
– Past actions with present relevance: "I have lost my keys." (I still don’t have them)
– Life experiences: "She has visited France three times."
– Unfinished actions: "He has lived in Algiers since 2015."
– Recent events: "They have just arrived."
Signal words: ever, never, just, already, yet, since, for, so far, recently
2. Past Simple
Form: Subject + past verb (regular -ed / irregular 2nd form)
Uses:
– Completed actions at a specific time in the past: "I visited Paris last year."
– Past habits: "She always walked to school."
– Finished time periods: "He lived in London for 5 years." (he no longer lives there)
Signal words: yesterday, last week/month/year, in 2010, ago, when, then
3. Key Differences
Specific vs Unspecified time: "I saw that movie yesterday." (Past Simple – specific) vs "I have seen that movie." (Present Perfect – unspecified)
Finished vs Unfinished: "I worked here for 10 years." (I don’t work here anymore) vs "I have worked here for 10 years." (I still work here)
Life experience vs Specific event: "I have visited Mecca." (experience) vs "I visited Mecca in 2019." (specific event)
4. Common Mistakes
✗ "I have seen him yesterday." (yesterday = specific past time)
✓ "I saw him yesterday."
✗ "I didn’t visit Paris yet." (yet = present perfect)
✓ "I haven’t visited Paris yet."
Exercises
1. Complete with present perfect or past simple: "She ___ (live) in Algeria since 2010."
2. Choose the correct tense: "I ___ (never/be) to London." "He ___ (go) there last year."
3. Correct the mistakes: "I have not finished my homework yesterday."
4. Write 5 sentences about your life experiences using present perfect.
