Writing: How to Write an Opinion Essay

An opinion essay (essay) is a piece of writing in which you express your opinion on a topic and support it with arguments and evidence. This is a key skill for the Baccalaureate English exam.

Structure

1. Introduction: Hook + background + thesis statement (your opinion).
2. Body paragraph 1: First argument with examples.
3. Body paragraph 2: Second argument with examples (or counterargument + refutation).
4. Conclusion: Restate your opinion + summarize + final thought.

Useful Phrases

• Expressing opinion: In my opinion, I believe that, From my point of view, It seems to me that
• Adding arguments: Moreover, Furthermore, In addition, Additionally, What is more
• Contrasting: However, On the other hand, Nevertheless, Although, Despite
• Giving examples: For instance, For example, Such as, In particular
• Concluding: In conclusion, To sum up, All things considered

Example Introduction

“In today’s world, technology has become an integral part of education. Some people believe that technology improves learning outcomes, while others argue that it creates distractions. In my opinion, when used properly, technology can greatly enhance the educational experience. This essay will explain why technology should be embraced in classrooms.”

Exercises

1. Write an opinion essay on the following topic: “Should students be required to wear school uniforms?” (150-200 words)
2. Identify the thesis statement, arguments, and conclusion in the example essay.
3. Create an outline for an essay on “Social media: a blessing or a curse?”
