Writing: How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph

Descriptive writing is a style of writing that creates a vivid picture of a person, place, thing, or event in the reader’s mind. It uses sensory details and figurative language to make the description come alive.

1. Structure of a Descriptive Paragraph

Topic Sentence: Introduces the subject being described. Example: "My grandmother’s kitchen is the most welcoming place in the world." Body Sentences: Provide detailed descriptions using sensory language. Concluding Sentence: Summarizes the overall impression. Example: "Every corner of the kitchen tells a story of love and tradition."

2. Using Sensory Details

Good descriptive writing appeals to the five senses:
– Sight: colors, shapes, sizes, movements – "The golden sunlight streamed through the window."
– Sound: loud, soft, musical – "The kettle whistled merrily on the stove."
– Smell: fragrant, fresh, aromatic – "The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air."
– Touch: smooth, rough, warm – "The wooden table felt smooth and cool under my fingers."
– Taste: sweet, sour, bitter – "The homemade lemonade was perfectly sweet and tangy."

3. Figurative Language

Similes: "Her smile was like sunshine."
Metaphors: "The city was a jungle of concrete and steel."
Personification: "The wind whispered through the trees."

4. Model Paragraph

"The old library was a sanctuary of silence and wonder. Tall mahogany shelves lined the walls, filled with books of every color and size. The smell of aged paper and wood polish hung in the air like a comforting perfume. Sunlight filtered through stained-glass windows, casting rainbow patterns on the marble floor. The only sound was the gentle rustle of pages turning. It was a place where time stood still."

1. Write a descriptive paragraph (80-100 words) about your favourite place using sensory details.
2. Identify the sensory details in the model paragraph above.
3. Rewrite this sentence using a simile: "The baby’s skin was soft."
4. Describe a person you admire using at least three different senses.
