Grammar: The Present Perfect Continuous Tense
The Present Perfect Continuous is an important tense in English that connects the past to the present. This lesson is designed for literary stream students preparing for the Baccalaureate exam.
Formation
The Present Perfect Continuous is formed with: Subject + have/has + been + verb-ing
- Affirmative: I have been studying. / She has been reading.
- Negative: I have not (haven’t) been sleeping. / He has not (hasn’t) been working.
- Interrogative: Have you been waiting? / Has she been crying?
Uses
1. Actions that started in the past and continue to the present
Example: I have been studying English for three years. (I started in the past and I still study now)
2. Actions that recently stopped with visible results
Example: She is tired because she has been working all day. (visible result: she is tired)
3. Expressing anger, annoyance, or frustration
Example: Someone has been using my computer without permission!
Difference between Present Perfect Simple and Continuous

Time Expressions
Common time expressions used with this tense: for, since, all day, all morning, recently, lately, how long.
Exercises
- Complete with the Present Perfect Continuous: “They ___ (travel) for six hours. She ___ (study) for her exam all week. How long ___ you ___ (wait)?”
- Choose the correct tense: “I have written / have been writing my essay, and I finally finished it. She has painted / has been painting the house; her clothes are all dirty.”
