Vocabulary: Family Members and Relationships
Knowing the vocabulary for family members and relationships is essential for everyday conversation in English. This lesson covers immediate and extended family, as well as relationship terms.
1. Immediate Family
Parents: father / dad, mother / mum, parents
Siblings: brother, sister, sibling
Children: son, daughter, child (plural: children)
Spouse: husband, wife, partner
Examples: "My father is a doctor. My mother works in a hospital. I have one brother and two sisters."
2. Extended Family
Grandparents: grandfather / granddad, grandmother / gran, grandparents
Grandchildren: grandson, granddaughter
Aunts and Uncles: uncle (mother’s or father’s brother), aunt (mother’s or father’s sister)
Cousins: cousin (male or female)
Nephew/Niece: nephew (brother’s or sister’s son), niece (brother’s or sister’s daughter)
In-laws: mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law
Possessive adjectives: my, your, his, her, our, their – "Her brother is my friend."
Possessive ‘s: "Ahmed’s mother is a teacher." "My parents’ house is big."
Questions about family: "Do you have any siblings?" "How many cousins do you have?" "What does your father do?"
4. Family Idioms and Expressions
"Like father, like son" – children resemble parents.
"Blood is thicker than water" – family relationships are strongest.
"Run in the family" – a quality shared by family members.
"Black sheep of the family" – a person who is different from the rest of the family.
Exercises
1. Draw your family tree and label each member in English.
2. Complete: "My mother’s brother is my ___. My sister’s daughter is my ___."
3. Write a short paragraph (50 words) describing your family using the vocabulary learned.
4. Ask and answer questions about family with a partner using the expressions above.
