Zero Conditional: General Truths and Facts

The zero conditional is used for things that are always true or scientific facts.

Form

If/When + present simple, present simple

“If you heat ice, it melts.”

“When it rains, the grass gets wet.”

Uses

• Scientific facts: If you freeze water, it becomes ice.
• General truths: If you don’t eat, you get hungry.
• Habits/routines: If I’m tired, I go to bed early.
• Rules: If the light is red, you stop.

If vs When

Both can be used. “If” implies possibility, “when” implies certainty.

Exercise

1. If you ___ (heat) water to 100C, it ___ (boil).
2. If I ___ (not/sleep) well, I ___ (feel) tired.
3. When the sun ___ (set), it ___ (get) dark.
