Used to: Past Habits and States

“Used to” describes past habits or states that are no longer true.

Form

Affirmative: Subject + used to + base verb

“I used to play football every weekend.” (I don’t anymore.)

Negative: Subject + didn’t use to + base verb

“I didn’t use to like coffee.” (Now I do.)

Question: Did + subject + use to + base verb?

“Did you use to live in Algiers?”

Examples

• She used to have long hair. (Now it’s short.)
• They used to live in the countryside. (Now they live in the city.)
• He didn’t use to study hard. (Now he studies a lot.)
• Did you use to play with dolls? (When you were young.)
