The Passive Voice: Past Simple

Form

Subject + was/were + past participle + (by agent)

Examples

• Active: Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.
• Passive: Hamlet was written by Shakespeare.
• Active: The students cleaned the classroom.
• Passive: The classroom was cleaned by the students.
• Active: They built the bridge in 1990.
• Passive: The bridge was built in 1990.

When to use passive

• When the agent is unknown: “My car was stolen.”
• When the action is more important: “The hospital was opened in 2010.”
• Formal writing and news reports.
