English — Grammar: Reported Speech (Statements and Questions) — 3rd Year Secondary (Literary Stream) — Baccalaureate — Algerian Program

Reported speech (or indirect speech) is used to report what someone else said without quoting them directly.

1. Reporting Statements

When reporting statements, the tense usually shifts back (backshift).

Direct Speech	Reported Speech	Example
Present Simple	Past Simple	“I play tennis.” -> He said he played tennis.
Present Continuous	Past Continuous	“I am reading.” -> She said she was reading.
Past Simple	Past Perfect	“I bought a car.” -> He said he had bought a car.
Present Perfect	Past Perfect	“I have seen it.” -> She said she had seen it.
Will	Would	“I will come.” -> He said he would come.
Can	Could	“I can swim.” -> She said she could swim.
Must	Had to	“I must go.” -> He said he had to go.

2. Reporting Questions

Yes/No questions: Use “if” or “whether”. Change word order.

• “Do you like coffee?” -> He asked me if I liked coffee.
• “Have you finished?” -> She asked whether I had finished.

Wh- questions: Keep the question word, change word order.

• “Where do you live?” -> He asked me where I lived.
• “What are you doing?” -> She asked what I was doing.

3. Reporting Commands and Requests

Use “tell/ask + to + infinitive”.

• “Sit down!” -> He told me to sit down.
• “Please help me.” -> She asked me to help her.
• “Don’t be late!” -> He told me not to be late.

1. Report: “I am studying English,” she said.
2. Report: “Will you come to the party?” he asked.
3. Report: “Don’t forget your homework!” the teacher said.
