Future Tenses: will, going to, present continuous
Introduction
In English, there are several ways to talk about the future. The three most common are: "will" + infinitive, "going to" + infinitive, and the present continuous tense. Each has a specific use depending on the situation and the speaker's intention.
1. Will + Infinitive
Uses:
- Predictions about the future: "It will rain tomorrow."
- Spontaneous decisions (deciding at the moment of speaking): "I'm thirsty. I will get a drink."
- Promises and offers: "I will help you with your homework."
- Facts about the future: "The sun will rise at 6 AM."
Form: Subject + will + base verb (+ complement). Example: "She will travel to London."
2. Going to + Infinitive
Uses:
- Plans and intentions (decided before speaking): "I am going to study medicine."
- Predictions based on evidence: "Look at those clouds! It is going to rain."
Form: Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb. Example: "They are going to build a new school."
3. Present Continuous for Future
Use: For fixed arrangements and appointments (usually with a specific time or place).
Form: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing (+ complement). Example: "I am meeting my friend at 5 PM."
Comparison Table
- Will: Spontaneous decision. Example: "The phone is ringing. I will answer it."
