Writing a Cause-Effect Essay
A lesson on writing cause-effect essays, for second year literary stream students.
Introduction
A cause-effect essay explains why something happens (causes) and what happens as a result (effects). This type of essay is common in academic writing and exams.
Structure
Introduction: Present the topic and thesis statement stating the cause-effect relationship. Body paragraphs: Each paragraph discusses one cause and its effect, or one effect and its causes. Use transition words: because, since, due to, as a result, consequently, therefore, thus, hence. Conclusion: Summarize the main points and restate the thesis.
Example
Topic: Causes and Effects of Pollution. Thesis: Industrialization and urbanization have led to severe pollution, which in turn causes health problems and environmental damage. Body 1: Industrial factories emit toxic gases (cause) -> air pollution and respiratory diseases (effect). Body 2: Urbanization and waste (cause) -> water and soil contamination (effect).
