The Past Continuous
Formation: was/were + verb-ing. Use: interrupted past action (I was reading when he arrived), parallel actions (While I was cooking, he was watching TV), background description (The sun was shining, birds were singing). Negative: was/were not + V-ing. Question: Was/Were + subject + V-ing? Signal words: while, when, as. Compare with Simple Past: action in progress vs complete action. Ex: I was watching TV when the phone rang. Exercise: Complete with past simple or past continuous. Related: Tenses.
